My name is Julie Porath. I am a Licensed Clinical Independent Social Worker or LICSW, and I have been a Social Worker at Bruce F. Vento Elementary since January of 2003.
I graduated from The College of St. Catherine with a B.A. Double Major in Social Work and Psychology. Two weeks after graduation I began my Master of Social Work program at The College of St. Catherine and The University of St. Thomas. I completed my MSW in May, 2002. During my undergrad I completed two Social Work internships. I was an intern at Partners for Violence Prevention doing community violence prevention and running a Peace Council group at St. Francis/St. James Catholic school located off of West 7th in St. Paul. My Senior year of college, I was an intern at Ramsey Junior High here in St. Paul Public Schools. During my Master's program I completed my Clinical Internship at Teenage Medical Services or TAMS, which is the adolescent outpatient clinic of Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. During this time I also completed my Clinical Research paper which looked at the impact of the media on eating disorders and body image in young women. After graduation I worked briefly as a Individual and Family Therapist at a private Day Treatment Facility in Eagan. It had always been a desire of mine to work for St. Paul Public Schools, so when I heard of an opening for a maternity leave, I jumped at the chance. I have been at Vento ever since, and love it!
When I am not busy working for St. Paul Schools, I spend some time as an On-call Social Worker at Children's Hospital in St. Paul. I also provide outside Supervision to Social Workers who need supervision in order to maintain their licensure. I am also very active in my professional organizations: Minnesota School Social Work Association & The MN Coalition of Licensed Social Workers. And, my current professional passion is working around issues of "White Privilege" and advocating for children of color.
In my non-work life, I spend time with my husband Eric of just over 1 year, my 9-year old Step-son Avery, and my 4 year old Westie named Boswell. We most recently took our very first official family vacation to the Grand Canyon in Arizona and survived. I enjoy playing tennis, going for long walks with my dog, biking, camping, reading, traveling, and watching my favorite TV shows (too many to mention). I also am spending a lot of time with my dad who is currently courageously fighting Kidney Cancer.
