Since the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics
was published in 1989, there has been a change in how mathematics is
taught in Saint Paul. The Saint Paul Public School District endorses
Reform Mathematics, also known as a standards-based curriculum or
integrated mathematics approach. This
student-centered approach to mathematics connects what is taught and
how it is taught. The mathematical content of the curriculum is shaped
by how students learn to work with mathematics processes embedded in
the curriculum. Observations of patterns and relationships lie at the
heart of acquiring deep understanding in mathematics. Reform
Mathematics is organized around problem solving that allows students to
discuss, test, and generalize the patterns and relationships observed.
Such classrooms encourage high-level thinking and problem solving that
helps students make sense of mathematics and its many applications.
